swapping mixed tapes with Chris Singewald

meet chris singewald.
chris is cool to the bone. without chris' musical influence on me in high school, i'd still be solely listening to creed. besides digging up great music, chris is a pottery genius. (are you getting an idea of how cool chris is)? so here we go...

5 favorite new (or new to you) songs of the past year

The Avett Brothers- If I Get Murdered In the City. I have obsessed over seeing these guys live, and I just love the energy and harmonies in their cd Emotionalism. I really enjoy the quote at the end of the song...."If i get murdered in the city, go read the letter in my desk, don't trouble with all of my belongings, but pay attention to the rest, make sure my sister knows i love her, make sure my mother knows the same, always remember there is nothing worth sharing like the love that lets us share our name."

Eddie Vedder- Hard Sun This whole cd is amazing, its the Into the Wild soundtrack. This song begins with a quote that makes me think of my fiance: "When I walk beside her, I am a better man, when I look to meet her, I always stagger back again..." (ed. awwwww!)

Band of Horses- Is There a Ghost? This is just a great song, tons of energy. It's the first song on their cd Cease to Begin.
Shawn Mullins- Beautiful Wreck. I love Shawn Mullins' voice....he plays great live too. Lyndsay was the first person to introduce him to me. Always thankful for that. (ed. after i stopped listening to creed, i discovered shawn mullins.)

REM- Bad Day & Nightswimming. My fiance got me into REM. I can't get enough of them now.

favorite older song(s) at the moment

Dave Matthews Band - Warehouse. This one has always been my favorite....The harmonies and layering in the music is just incredible, and there is even a little cow bell at the end! I bought this cd as a freshmen in high school, thanks to my older brother. Again, lots of energy and you can dance to this one without any troubles.

Pearl Jam- Elderly Women Behind the Counter in a Small Town & Given to Fly & Driftin' & Nothingman & Off He Goes. Pearl Jam has always been my #1 band since high school. All of these songs has significance to me, and the list could go on forever. Eddie Vedder is an amazing individual.
Ben Harper- Pleasure and Pain. Ben Harper was the first concert I ever went to. I saw him at Luther College and I managed to get 10 feet from the stage. His early stuff is really powerful, and his new stuff is more gospel influenced. When he makes music....it always sounds good. (ed. chris even has a sweet ben harper tat on his arm!)

The Decemberists- My Crane Wife. This is actually a whole cd. The Decemberists have a unique sound with lots of odd instruments you would not see in a band today, and it works so well!! The lead singer writes in an Old English style, and he is very graceful with his words. I would say it is easily one the best cds of 2007.

Bob Dylan- Tangled Up in Blue. I love listening to this song and the cd that it is on in the Ceramics Studio.

best concert you've attended
Pearl Jam- Summer 2003. It was in Wisconsin at an outdoor music venue.....Alpine Valley Music Theatre. My brother JOE got us 6th row tickets and Pearl Jam played for 3 1/2 hours. I never sat down once.

Dave Matthews Band- Summer 2004. Alpine Valley Music Theatre. Guster opened for them. The whole event was magical....We had fun. If anyone can, get the Alpine Valley, it seems like bands always play great shows there.

last great film you saw

Into The Wild. This was directed by Sean Penn. I read the book before I saw the movie, and it was a GREAT adaptation to the book. I felt like I knew so much more about the movie since I read the book and did some research before hand. The soundtrack by Eddie Vedder fits so well too. Everyone should see this film.

last great book you've read

I am working on Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert M. Pirsig. My high school art teacher told me to read this book, and I am finally taking his advice. Its coming along well. My fiance is reading Kite Runner and a good friend of mine read it too. I think I will read it when she is done.
poem/song lyric/quote that resonates with you

"The wealthiest person, is a pauper at timescompared to the man, with a satisfied mind."-jeff buckley
best purchase in the past year
After being in an accident last August....I purchased a 2000 VW Passat station wagon! Its a manual, and I can finally hall all of my pottery stuff around!! I love it!

favorite tv show at the moment
I don't have access to a TV right now, and I am alright with that. BUT, I do miss animal planet, history channel, and discovery channel.
favorite website/blog
youtube.....I am a freak I know. I love looking at old performances by bands that I would never be able to see in person. I have been checking out old Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones, and Elvis Presley videos recently.

one thing that you've learned in the past year
"Make more pots." I learned this from an established ceramic artist last month. I am trying to make my way in the ceramics field, and I am trying to get places! This visiting artist had to say this half a dozen times during his demonstrations......make more pots.......To me, it pretty much means....just keep going and don't stop! If you love it, keep doing it and things will work out.

one humorous ancedote from the past week in your life

This weekend my Karyn (my fiance) and I attended a Bridal Shower in the Twin Cities, and my aunt Mary signed her card for us "aunt mom" by mistake! Classic!!
